SHANTIWORKS WORKSHOP SERIES 2024: Disrupting entrapment and oppression in the lives of victims-survivors

$1,650.00

Collectively and individually as practitioners, teams, and systems, we want to learn and create possibilities to interrupt conditions of entrapment and oppression in the lives of victims-survivors, and purposefully share responsibility for intervening and responding to domestic and family violence risk and lethality.

Examining our community and systemic responses is critical in identifying possible points of intervention that could assist with stopping domestic violence homicides and coercive suicides – the latter of which remains largely unexplored and examined in our domestic violence work.

We know that victims-survivors are never passive and want to explore the ways that victims-survivors resist control, abuse, and violence, and how the concept of resistive violence can support our everyday risk and safety work, and advocacy.

Drawing on the work of Professor Jane Monckton-Smith and her development of her 8-stage homicide timeline, we will offer a set up for exploring this work. We will unpack stories of domestic violence homicide, coerced suicides where victims-survivors have taken their lives, tactical suicides where perpetrators have used suicide as an extension of abuse, and stories of resistive violence where victims-survivors have resorted to using violence to preserve life and dignity.
